Chickens settle in at Gretton

Our new chickens seem to have settled in well to their new home within the Academy. We are pleased to announce the children have chosen their names and we can confirm they are now called Florence, Feathers and Felicity.

Our new chickens seem to have settled in well to their new home within the Academy. We are pleased to announce the children have chosen their names and we can confirm they are now called Florence, Feathers and Felicity.

The chickens have been brought into the Academy to give students the chance to take on some responsibility. The chickens have also been used to link in with the curriculum, making lesson such as science more engaging. One class has been learning about birds and their environment and have used the chickens to look at the features of the birds and what they eat.

Each morning, a group of pupils come in early to feed the chickens and let them out into their pen. Every week a class is also responsible for the chickens at lunchtime and the children have the opportunity to say hello, help clean them out, feed them and collect the eggs.

The chickens currently produce a box of eggs between them each week. The students have designed posters and have started to sell them to parents to help pay towards the chickens’ food.

The chickens also eat some of the leftovers from lunchtime including their particular favourite sweetcorn. The gardening club also saves so of the greens they have grown to feed to them.

Mrs Hill said ‘The students are really enjoying the chickens. They love helping out and getting involved with caring for them. The chickens have also had a great impact on the students in other ways, some of them have grown in confidence and have learnt responsibility skills whilst other seems to have found more of a voice through looking them.’

If you wish to purchase a box of eggs for £1.50, please visit reception.
